Ingredients

Heart cookies are crispy, tender and taste great. There is no other gift which is more precious and romantic, than attention and care which homemade baking conveys.

Prepare the ingredients.

Take butter out of the fridge in advance, for it to warm up to room temperature. Beat butter and powdered sugar. Add the egg to butter and stir in.

Add 150 g of sieved flour along with the corn or potato starch, mix until smooth and elastic dough forms. Add a bit more flour, if needed, but not more than 20 g.

Split the dough in half, add the food coloring to one half of the dough and mix well.

Wrap each half of the dough in clingfilm and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Place the dough, which was colored red with the food coloring, on a flour-dusted work surface, roll it out ½ cm thick and cut out heart shapes with a cookie cutter. By placing one heart on top of another one assemble all of them into a tight stack.

Roll the not-colored light dough into cords and use them to cover the stack of hears all over. Then carefully roll the dough cylinder back and forth to even out its surface. As a result, there would be a straight roll with hearts in its core. Wrap the roll in clingfilm and place in the fridge for 2 hours.

Preheat the oven to 200 C (350 F). Once the dough is chilled, while it still is wrapped in clingfilm roll it back and forth a few times over an even surface, then remove the clingfilm and slice the dough into rounds 5 mm thick.

Line a baking tray with baking paper and place the cookies there. Bake for 10-15 minutes on a shelf in the lower third of the oven.

Once the cookies are cooked, take them out of the oven, allow to cool, then remove from the baking paper.
