    Apple crisp is one of the most popular apple desserts in American cooking. Find flavourful juicy apples under the nice crust! We think it’s not only delicious but also healthy. Thus, it can be both a great and original healthy breakfast and a snack for children. This dessert is eaten with a spoon. It tastes great warm with a scoop of your favourite ice cream.

    Preheat the oven to 180°C. In a big bowl combine the oats, flour, cane sugar, coconut flakes and baking soda.

    Chop the almonds with a knife, not too finely. Add them to the bowl with the dry ingredients. Mix well.

    Make the filling: Wash and peel the apples, cut into medium-sized pieces and drizzle with some lemon juice. Combine the remaining ingredients: 1 tbsp starch, 3 tbsp brown sugar, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples and mix carefully. Set aside.

    Dice the cold butter. Add to the dry ingredients and rub all together till crumbly.

    Grease a baking form (we used a 28x20 cm, a 25x25 cm is also good). Spread the apple filling over the bottom of the form in one layer.

    Top with the crumbles.

    Bake till the crust is golden, 30-40 mins. Remove the dessert from the oven and let cool slightly.

    Tips:

    1. You may use pressed cane sugar instead of brown.
    2. If no shredded coconut is available, omit it.
    3. You may use any nuts to your taste, e.g. walnuts, hazelnuts etc.
